The Galician Rías Altas are famous for their breathtaking cliff landscapes, strategic lighthouses, capes, stunning Atlantic environments, crystal-clear beaches, and iconic cities such as A Coruña.

Itinerary
  • Day 1: Arrival in A Coruña

On the first day, depending on the transportation chosen (own vehicle or rental car), we will head to the accommodation in A Coruña. The city is easily accessible by airport, port, train station, and direct highways. If you opt for your own vehicle, you won’t have any trouble reaching the city and checking in at the reserved accommodation. If, on the other hand, you choose the rental car option, we will pick up the car at the designated location (airport or train station) and then head to the accommodation.

Depending on your arrival time, you can either rest or immediately start exploring A Coruña. This first day will be entirely dedicated to visiting the city. We will enjoy an initial guided tour with an official guide to see the city’s most iconic landmarks.

We recommend visiting the Tower of Hercules, where you can admire the magnificent Roman lighthouse and its surroundings by the Atlantic Ocean. Stroll through its sculpture park and take in the views. We’ll visit Maria Pita Square, with its iconic Town Hall Building, and tour the old town, where you’ll find charming sites like the Romantic Garden of San Carlos, the Castle of San Antón, the Collegiate Church of Santa María del Campo, and Plaza de las Bárbaras. If time permits, you can take a final stroll around the marina and markets and enjoy the excellent cuisine of the Atlantic coast.

We will rest at the designated accommodation, where we’ll stay overnight and prepare for the second day.

  • Day 2: A Coruña – Betanzos – Pontedeume – Fragas do Eume – Ferrol

Breakfast at the accommodation in A Coruña, then we head towards Betanzos.

In Betanzos, we’ll explore its impressive historic center with landmarks like Ponte Vella, the Convent of the Augustinian Recollects, the medieval walls, and the Constitution Square, among many highlights of its designated historic-artistic ensemble.
We’ll leave Betanzos for Pontedeume, where, along the way, we can stop at Pazo de Mariñán to stroll through its gardens. Once in Pontedeume, we’ll see the long stone bridge spanning the Eume River and the Andrade Tower. Here, you can decide whether to have lunch in Ferrol directly or visit Fragas do Eume beforehand.

If there’s time, Fragas do Eume is a magical place with exceptionally well-preserved flora and fauna. It is an Atlantic thermophilic forest, considered one of the best examples on the continent.

In Ferrol, we’ll enjoy its exquisite gastronomy. In the city, you can visit its old town, the Naval Museum, the Castle of San Felipe, or its charming Main Square. Before returning to A Coruña, if time permits, we can stop by Andrade Castle, a small but well-preserved castle atop the Pena de Leboreiro, offering breathtaking valley views.

After an eventful day, we’ll return to A Coruña for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

  • Day 3: A Coruña – Malpica – Camariñas – Muxía – Fisterra – Muxía (Costa da Morte)

We’ll have breakfast at the accommodation and head to the first stop: Malpica. We’ll take a route along the famous Costa da Morte, passing through coastal towns, cliffs, and capes where even the most skilled sailors have faced challenges to avoid shipwrecks.

Malpica de Bergantiños is a coastal village where you can enjoy its port and beaches. Our primary reason for stopping here is to admire the Miradoiro de Santo Adrián, which offers views of the Sisargas Islands, or visit the base of the Punta Nariga Lighthouse. Before heading to Camariñas, we’ll stop by another lighthouse, the Faro Roncudo. While the lighthouse itself is simple, the surrounding environment is spectacular, with waves crashing violently against the cliffs and stunning views of the Ría de Corme y Laxe.

Heading south, we’ll visit Camariñas, take a leisurely walk through the town, and visit the Cabo Vilán Lighthouse. This lighthouse is particularly interesting due to its surroundings; the landscapes are as beautiful as they are treacherous, having witnessed several shipwrecks, including the sinking of the Serpent.

After enjoying Camariñas, we’ll travel to Muxía, where we’ll check into the hotel. We can have lunch in the village and take a relaxed stroll to visit the Muxía Lighthouse and the Santuario da Virxe da Barca. We’ll end the day by resting at the designated hotel.

  • Day 4: Muxía – Touriñán Lighthouse – Finisterre – Ézaro Waterfall – Caldeiras do Castro

We’ll have breakfast at the hotel and head toward the Touriñán Lighthouse. Like all the lighthouses along the Costa da Morte, its surroundings are spectacular, with cliffs and magical landscapes. On the way to Finisterre, it’s worth stopping at the Fisterra viewpoint, where you’ll enjoy an incredible view of the town. Once we arrive in the village of Fisterra, we’ll visit its lighthouse and contemplate the ancient "Finis Terrae,” the end of the world. Here, people believed the sun extinguished itself in the waters.

This is a place of legends, fantasy, and fascination. After experiencing this extraordinary setting, we’ll head toward the beautiful Ézaro Waterfall, or, if you prefer, enjoy lunch first in Finisterre. Alternatively, we can stop in Cee on the way back to eat near its charming beaches.

The Ézaro Waterfall is a tranquil spot, perfect for strolling along its wooden pathways and enjoying its splendor from various viewpoints. Kayaks are often available to rent for those who wish to get closer to the waterfall.

After this visit, we’ll head to the Caldeiras do Castro, a perfect spot to relax and take a dip in the cool waters of its natural pools. Here, you can also visit its chapel and picnic area.

  • Day 5: Muros – Noia – Santiago - Origin

We’ll have breakfast at the hotel and check out before heading toward Santiago, passing through Muros. Upon arriving in Muros, we can stop to explore this beautiful fishing village, featuring interesting beaches such as Area Maior, a largely unspoiled beach with Monte Louro as a backdrop. We’ll stroll through its port and fish market before continuing toward Noia. If we don’t mind taking a slight detour, we can head to the Ponte Nafonso and visit the Tambre Hydroelectric Power Station, also known as the Hydroelectric Cathedral. There, we can admire the fisherman's shelter and cross the suspension bridge to take in the landscape.

When we reach Noia, we’ll stroll through the village and visit the Parish Church of San Martín de Noia and the Plaza da Constitución. This village is known for shellfish, particularly cockles and clams. It’s an excellent place to take a break and sample some of the local cuisine.

Once we’re finished, we’ll head straight to Santiago, where we’ll check into our chosen hotel. The afternoon will be free to either explore the city or relax. We’ll spend the night at the hotel.

  • Day 6: Santiago de Compostela

We’ll have breakfast in Santiago and prepare to explore a city that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for nearly 40 years. A guided tour will take us to the city’s most iconic landmarks. We’ll start at the Praza das Praterías, walk through Rúa da Acibechería—the final street for pilgrims completing the Camino de Santiago—and arrive at the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago. Here, we’ll visit the Plaza Obradoiro and the Parador Reyes Católicos, enter through the Pórtico de la Gloria, and tour the cathedral’s most interesting areas, including the chance to embrace the Apostle.

For lunch, we’ll sample the local cuisine, which includes dishes such as Caldo Gallego, octopus, raxo, cheeses, and wines. We’ll spend the evening resting at the hotel.

  • Day 7: Breakfast and End of Services

On the final morning, we’ll have breakfast and check out of the accommodation. If we opted for a rental car, we’ll return it to the designated location (train station or airport).

We wish you a pleasant journey home and hope these days in Galicia have left you with unforgettable memories.
