Asturias, along with Galicia, are among the most impressive regions of Spain. They are some of the greenest areas of the peninsula, with a significant number of National Parks, Monuments, charming places with unique beaches, and much more.

Itinerary
  • Day 1. Origin – Guided tour Oviedo

On the first day, depending on the transportation you have chosen (own vehicle or rental car), we will head to the accommodation in Oviedo.

After completing the check-in at the hotel, we will start our visit to the city. Oviedo invites a relaxed walk through its streets, where we can admire its buildings and markets. We will take a guided tour to explore the city's most iconic spots.

Among the places you must not miss are the Cathedral of Oviedo, with its treasures such as the Cruz de la Victoria, Caja de las Ágatas, and Cruz de los Ángeles. Also notable are the church of Santa María del Naranco and its surroundings on Monte Naranco, the church of San Miguel de Lillo, the Basilica of San Juan el Real, and Campo San Francisco, where you will find statues of figures like Mafalda or Woody Allen, who was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts.

  • Day 2. Oviedo – Cangas de Onís – Covadonga – Ponga

The second day will be dedicated to exploring Covadonga first, then we will head to Cangas de Onís and Ponga.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will head towards Covadonga.

This valley, located in the north of the Picos de Europa, is nestled between high mountains and was, according to legend, the place where the Reconquista began, when the Muslim invasions were stopped on these slopes, with Pelayo at the helm.

The Virgin of Covadonga is located in the Santa Cueva, where it is said that Don Pelayo sought refuge. In this place, there is a small chapel and a waterfall that falls directly into a large pool.

At the top of the hill stands the Santuario de Covadonga, built with impressive reddish stone, surrounded by the green landscape of the National Park of Picos de Europa. This is undoubtedly a must-see visit.

If you prefer, you can also go to the Mirador de Entrelagos to view the lakes of Covadonga.

Once we finish our visit, we will head to Cangas de Onís. The most iconic feature of this town is its Roman Bridge, with the hanging Cruz de la Victoria, which has become one of the most iconic images of Asturias. The town is located in the National Park of Picos de Europa, so the scenery, with its mountains and forests, is stunning.

Depending on time, we can have lunch in the town or, if we have energy, continue towards Ponga. If you opt to visit Ponga, keep in mind that it is a hiking area where we can enjoy its spectacular landscapes, and it’s likely that we will walk some of its routes.

This natural park is very close to the National Park of Picos de Europa. We can explore the Desfiladero de los Beyos, Buamón, or some of its viewpoints, such as El Tombu la Espinera, as well as the villages surrounding the park, like San Juan de Beleño or Selaño.

At the end of the day, we will return to Oviedo. If we return early or decide to go directly from Cangas de Onís, we might have time for a relaxing walk around the city.

  • Day 3. Oviedo – Gijón

We will have breakfast in Oviedo and check out from the hotel. From there, we will head towards Gijón, which is only a 30-minute drive away.

Once we arrive in Gijón, we will check in at the accommodation and start exploring the city. Gijón is a city especially enjoyed for its seafront promenade. We will take a walk along its beaches, parks, and avenues, visiting the Cimadevilla neighborhood, where we will find the famous Elogio del Horizonte by Eduardo Chillida. While strolling along the promenade, we will enjoy a lovely view of the Church of San Pedro Apostol, and visit the Roman Baths of Campo Valdés, dating back to the 1st century.

As we continue through the alleyways of the neighborhood, we will reach Plaza Mayor de Gijón and head to the outskirts to see the Monument to the Mother of the Emigrant, located in El Rinconín, where we can also enjoy its small coves.

If we have time, we can head towards one of the most impressive buildings in Gijón: La U. Laboral, the City of Culture, which is near the Atlantic Botanical Garden.

For golf lovers, there are several golf clubs near Gijón, such as Club Golf Madera III, Deva Golf Pitch & Putt, Municipal Golf Course La Llorea, or Real Club Golf de Castiello.

Of course, we will also take the opportunity to enjoy the delicious local cuisine, such as chopa de sidra, roast lamb, bollo preñado, or the traditional calderetas gijonesas, not forgetting a espicha, which is a tasting of cider served directly from the barrel.

  • Day 4. Lastres – Mirador del Fitu – Ribadesella – Bufones de Pría – Llanes – Gijón

We will have breakfast at the hotel in Gijón and set off for a day filled with charming villages, beaches, and stunning landscapes.

Throughout the journey, we will travel along the coast, encountering many amazing beaches. We cannot visit all of them, but some of the chosen ones are truly unique.

We will begin in the village of Lastres, which has been named one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. This picturesque fishing village is located on a terraced hillside, offering spectacular views. After our visit, we will head to a magical spot: the Mirador del Fitu. This viewpoint has several recreational areas, where you can enjoy a unique landscape. It features a panoramic point, picnic tables, barbecues, and much more.

After enjoying the viewpoint, we will continue our journey to another of the most charming villages: Ribadesella.

Ribadesella is known for its natural wonders, such as the Cueva de Tito Bustillo, a cave with well-preserved prehistoric paintings. We can also visit the Cuevona de Cuevas del Agua, a peculiar tunnel once used for cars (though it is now restricted to certain days, such as during four days of Easter).

This village, surrounded by its estuary, beaches, and natural parks, is perfect for strolling and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere it offers.

Further on, we will head to the Bufones de Pría, a surprising natural phenomenon. The erosion of the sea has created chimneys and cracks connected to the ocean, which at certain times emit a loud roar when the sea water enters the crevices.

From Bufones de Pría to Llanes, we will pass three impressive beaches, but one stands out: the Gulpiyuri beach. This beach, curiously, has no direct view of the sea due to the cliffs that surround it. The salty water from the sea seeps through the cliffs and forms this small white sand beach, with unique views. The beach does not have direct access, so you must stop in Naves and walk along a rural path to get there. Although it’s a bit tricky, it is worth the visit as it is a little-known spot, classified as a Natural Monument.

The last village on our route is Llanes, where we can enjoy a walk along the Paseo de San Pedro, with views of the cliffs and the Mirador de la Talá. We will walk along the Playa del Sablón to the town center, where we can visit the Basilica of Santa María del Conceyu and see the Abandoned Palace of the Dukes of Estrada and the Medieval Tower. Although these monuments cannot be accessed, they are interesting to view from the outside. Also, at the port, we will see the Cubos de la Memoria, an artistic work representing Llanes, and we will head towards the Llanes Lighthouse and the Playa de Toró, one of the most impressive beaches in the area.

Finally, after a day filled with natural and cultural beauty, we will return to Gijón to rest and spend the last night of our trip.

  • Day 5. Gijón – Guided tour Avilés – Cudillero – Luarca - Ribadeo

We will have breakfast in Gijón and check out from the hotel. If we wake up early, we can take the opportunity to make two quick visits to two beautiful villages near Avilés: Candas and Luanco.

Next, we will head to Avilés, where we will take a guided tour. Avilés, an industrial town in the Asturias region, is a vibrant city full of cultural life, highly committed to literature, music, theater, cinema, and painting. Notable sights include the Casa de la Cultura and the Óscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, as well as the Teatro Palacio Valdés, which hosts nationally significant performances.

After the visit, we have the option to eat in Avilés or continue our journey to the next village: Cudillero. What makes Cudillero special is its unique physical layout. The village, hidden both from the sea and from the land, is a charming place with colorful houses built on the hillside, forming a beautiful amphitheater around the Plaza de San Pedro, located at the center of the village.

Heading towards Ribadeo, if we have time, we can make a stop at Luarca, an interesting village along the way. If time is tight, we can continue directly to Ribadeo, where we will check in and spend the night.

If we have time, we can take the opportunity to explore Ribadeo, a picturesque Galician village that borders Asturias. Ribadeo has a mix of medieval remains and modernist buildings, which, along with its natural surroundings, make the place enchanting.

In Ribadeo, we can visit the Forte de San Damián, the Panoramic Elevator, stroll through the marina, and explore the Plaza de España, where we can admire iconic buildings like the Torre dos Morenos.

We will leave the main attraction for the following day: the famous Playa de las Catedrales, which is a bit further from the town center, but is definitely worth the visit.

  • Day 6. Ribadeo – Playa de las Catedrales – Ferrol – Puente de Eume – Betanzos – La Coruña

We will have breakfast in Ribadeo and check out. We will head towards the famous Playa de las Catedrales, one of the most impressive landscapes of the Galician coast. These rock formations, thanks to erosion, have created caves and natural arches. When the tide is low, white sand corridors and pools emerge, creating a unique view between the cliffs. A visit to this site requires prior reservation.

Once we have enjoyed this spectacular landscape, we have the option to make a small detour to Taramundi, a charming village that looks like it’s straight out of a storybook. Surrounded by hills, mist, rivers, streams, and forests, Taramundi is famous for its mills, ruins of forts, and its craft knife-making. However, this detour is only recommended if we have enough time, as the day includes other very interesting stops along the route.

Continuing our journey towards Ferrol, we won’t make any stops until we reach the city. Once in Ferrol, we can enjoy its exquisite gastronomy. We will take the opportunity to visit the old town of the city, the Naval Museum, the Castle of San Felipe, and its beautiful Plaza Mayor.

If we have time, we can head to the Fragas de Eume, a magical place of exceptional conservation, with an Atlantic thermophilic forest that is considered one of the best examples of this type in Europe.

We will continue towards Puente de Eume, where we will be able to admire the stone bridge crossing the Eume River, as well as the Torreón dos Andrade. Continuing the journey, we will pass by Castelo de Andrade, where a small, well-preserved castle stands, dominating the entire valley from the Peña de Leboreiro. The views from here are breathtaking.

Our next stop will be Betanzos, a town of great historical beauty. We will visit its impressive historic center, which houses the Ponte Vella, the Convento de las Agustinas Recoletas, the medieval walls, and the Plaza de la Constitución, among other monuments in its declared historical-artistic ensemble.

Finally, we will reach La Coruña, where we will check in at the accommodation. If it’s not too late, we can take a walk around the city and, if desired, dine at one of its typical restaurants.

  • Day 7. Guided tour of La Coruña

We will have breakfast at the hotel and prepare for a day of exploration with an official guide to discover the most iconic places in the city.

We will begin our visit at the Plaza de María Pita, where the iconic City Hall stands. Next, we will enter the old town, one of the most charming corners of the city, where we will see places like the Romantic Garden of San Carlos, the Castle of San Antón, the Santa María del Campo Collegiate Church, and the Plaza de las Bárbaras.

After touring these historical treasures, we will enjoy the rest of the day strolling through the maritime port of La Coruña and its markets, where we can try its excellent Atlantic cuisine. Among the highlights of our route, we will also visit the Tower of Hercules, a magnificent Roman lighthouse that offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. We will also enjoy a walk through the sculptural park, a unique space to relax and appreciate art in nature.

  • Day 8. Breakfast and end of services

The next morning, we will have breakfast and check out from the accommodation. If we have rented a vehicle, we will return it at the indicated place (train station or airport).

We wish you a pleasant journey back, and hope these days in Galicia have left you with unforgettable memories.
