Self-Guided Tour by car (own or rental), during which, over 7 days (6 nights), we will visit places such as Santiago de Compostela, the Monastery of Oseira, Allariz, Ourense, Ribadavia, the Sil Canyon, Monforte de Lemos, and Lugo.
While Galicia’s coasts are spectacular, its interior is equally fascinating. We will embark on a unique journey through varied and charming areas between Santiago de Compostela, Ourense, and Lugo.
- Day 1. Origin – Santiago de Compostela
The first day, depending on the chosen vehicle (own car or rental car), we will head to the designated accommodation in Santiago de Compostela. If a rental vehicle is chosen, it will be picked up at the designated location. We chose Santiago because it has various stations that are easily accessible, allowing us to take advantage of the opportunity to visit this magnificent city. On this day, after checking in at the hotel, we will tour the city with a guide. We will visit various landmarks of the city, declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity, such as its Cathedral, entering through its Pórtico de la Gloria, the Platerías Squares, Plaza del Obradoiro, and the Parador Reyes Católicos.
We will dine in the city to enjoy its exceptional gastronomy, such as Galician broth, octopus, raxo, cheeses, and wines.
We will end the day resting in the assigned accommodation.
- Day 2. Pazo de Santa Cruz de Rivadulla - Monastery of Oseira – Allariz – Ourense
After a good rest at the accommodation in Santiago, we head towards Ourense, making some very interesting stops along the way. The first is at the Pazo de Santa Cruz de Rivadulla, where we will explore its gardens, mill, famous fountains, and vineyards where Ulla wine is produced.
The second stop will be the Monastery of Oseira, a monastery that, after being abandoned for a century, was restored and a group of Cistercian monks worked hard to return it to its former glory. A remarkable library and a small archive were added. It is a must-visit destination when passing nearby.
Depending on the time available, there are two options that, if possible, are highly recommended to combine. Upon arriving in Ourense, we will check in at the accommodation and can visit the city and have lunch, or we can head to a municipality called Allariz, an enchanting town that won the European Urban Planning Award for the restoration of its historic center, enjoy its gastronomy, and later visit Ourense.
After a rather eventful day, we will rest at the chosen accommodation in Ourense.
- Day 3. Winery Visit - Ribadavia – Castelo de Ribadavia - Outariz Thermal Baths
After having breakfast at our accommodation in Ourense, we will head to a Ribeiro D.O. Winery, where we will enjoy a guided tour, including a special wine tasting.
If we wish to expand our wine experience in the area, we will find many other wineries and vineyards, such as Pazo Casanova.
Once the visit is complete, we will continue to Ribadavia, where we will explore the town, a fascinating place by the Avia River. It is a pleasure to stroll through its charming streets. There are several places to enjoy tapas or a meal. In the same town, you will find the Castelo de Ribadavia, very close to its Main Square, making it a great way to spend time before heading to the Outariz Thermal Baths.
The Thermal Baths are a place of Zen relaxation, featuring all the comforts of oriental civilization with its innovative Japanese-inspired techniques.
Finally, we will return to the accommodation and enjoy a good rest in Ourense.
- Day 4: Ribeira Sacra - Catamaran Route through the Sil Canyon - Monforte de Lemos - Oca Augas Spa
We start the day with breakfast at the accommodation in Ourense, then head to the Monastery of Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil, one of the most emblematic monasteries in the Ribeira Sacra during the Middle Ages. After the 1835 disentailment, it was abandoned, but much of its structure has been preserved in good condition. The monastery is located in an area of impressive beauty, with spectacular views of the Sil Canyon. To access it, a detour is necessary in Parada de Sil.
Along the river, near the Ribeira Sacra Viewpoint in Vilar de Cerrada, we find the Embarcadero de Santo Estevo, from where we will begin a Catamaran Route through the Sil Canyon.
Sil Canyon Mythology:
According to Roman mythology, the Sil Canyon has a fascinating story related to jealousy. It is said that Jupiter, the father of the gods, fell deeply in love with Galicia, a region so green and fertile that it captured his heart. Juno, his wife, jealous of his love for the Galician land, sought to punish Jupiter by creating a wound in the heart of Galicia, something that would diminish its beauty and make her husband stop loving it. Thus, the Sil Canyon was born, a deep rift in the land separating the mountains of the Ribeira Sacra.
However, the story does not end there. Despite Juno's attempt, the Sil Canyon failed to fulfill its purpose. Jupiter, far from despising Galicia for this wound, became even more fascinated by its beauty, wild nature, and powerful land. Enraged by his wife's disobedience, Jupiter cursed Juno, condemning her to wander forever through the rift she had created as an eternal punishment, like a wound that would never heal.
This mystical and symbolic tale is one of the many myths associated with the Sil Canyon, an impressive natural formation that, like the legend, has endured through the centuries, marked by the power of nature and history.
During the catamaran ride, we will admire the canyon's towering cliffs, which reach 500 meters in several places, the impressive slopes exceeding 70%, and the canyon walls, which in some areas host the centuries-old vineyards of the Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin.
For lunch, we will head to Monforte de Lemos, stopping along the way at the Monastery of Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil, a monastery of Baroque and Romanesque style whose origins date back to the 6th and 7th centuries. After dining in Monforte de Lemos, we can visit the Monastery of San Vicente do Pino, a monumental complex guarded by the remains of the Castle of San Vicente, featuring the Keep and ancient walls.
After completing the tour, we will head to the Oca Augas Santas Spa Hotel, where we can enjoy a complete moment of relaxation in its thermal waters.
Finally, we will spend the night in Monforte de Lemos, at the selected accommodation.
- Day 5: Monasteries of Samos - Sarria - Lugo
After breakfast and checking out of the accommodation in Monforte de Lemos, we head to the Monastery of Samos.
The Monastery of San Julián and Santa Basilisa de Samos has an early medieval origin, specifically from the Visigothic Kingdom in the 7th century. Its foundation is attributed to Saint Martin of Braga, and it was later renovated by Saint Fructuosus.
Unfortunately, two major fires mark the most significant events in the recent history of this abbey. However, no trace of these tragic events remains today, and the monastery continues to serve as the headquarters of the Benedictine Order.
Once the visit is complete, you have the option to dine in Samos or Sarria, or alternatively, head straight to Lugo for lunch.
Upon arriving in Lugo, we will tour its city, which is notably marked by the Roman Walls of the ancient city of Lucus Augusti, declared a World Heritage Site. Additionally, we will explore its old town, the Provincial Museum, the Mosaic House, and the Cathedral of Lugo, where we can appreciate its rich history and architecture.
In the evening, we will rest at the designated accommodation.
- Day 6: Castelo de Pambre - Monte do Gozo - Santiago
We have breakfast at the hotel in Lugo, check out, and head towards Santiago de Compostela through towns that are part of the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. Along the way, we will stop at Castelo de Pambre, a medieval castle located in Palas de Rey, dating back to the 14th century. It was owned by the Counts of Monterrei and played a significant role in safeguarding and protecting the Camino de Santiago, ensuring the safety of pilgrims traveling through the area.
We recommend stopping in Melide, renowned for its gastronomy, especially for its exquisite "Pulpo á Feira", considered one of the best in all of Spain. It's a culinary experience not to be missed.
As we approach Santiago de Compostela, we will stop at Monte do Gozo, an iconic location for pilgrims. From here, you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the city of Santiago, a sight that leaves an indelible mark on those completing the Camino de Santiago.
Finally, we will check into the designated accommodation in Santiago de Compostela and spend the rest of the day strolling and enjoying the city that marked the beginning of our adventure.
- Day 7: Breakfast and end of services
On the next morning, we will have breakfast and check out of the accommodation. If we have opted for a rental vehicle, it will be returned to the designated location (train station or airport).
We wish you a pleasant journey back and hope these days in Galicia have left unforgettable memories in your heart.
