Although the coasts of Galicia are spectacular, its inland areas are just as fascinating. We will take a unique journey through very diverse and charming regions between Santiago de Compostela, Ourense, and Lugo.

Itinerary
  • Day 1: Origin – Santiago de Compostela.

On the first day, depending on the chosen vehicle (own car or rental), we will head to the designated accommodation in Santiago de Compostela. If we choose the rental vehicle, it will be collected at the specified location. We selected Santiago as the starting point, as it is accessible from various stations and provides the opportunity to explore its rich history and architecture.

After check-in at the hotel, we will enjoy a guided tour of the city, exploring the most iconic places of this city, which has been declared a World Heritage Site. We will visit the Cathedral of Santiago, entering through its famous Portico of Glory, and tour the Plaza de Platerías, Plaza del Obradoiro, and the Parador of the Catholic Monarchs, among other points of interest.

For lunch, we will indulge in exceptional Galician cuisine, enjoying traditional dishes such as caldo gallego, pulpo a la gallega, raxos, cheeses, and local wines.

At the end of the day, we will return to the assigned accommodation to rest and prepare for the next day of adventure.

  • Day 2: Pazo de Santa Cruz de Rivadulla – Monastery of Oseira – Allariz – Ourense.

After a good rest at the accommodation in Santiago, we head towards Ourense, making some very interesting stops along the way. The first stop will be at the Pazo de Santa Cruz de Rivadulla, where we can explore its beautiful gardens, restored mill, famous fountains, and vineyards where Ulla wine is produced.

The next stop will be at the Monastery of Oseira, a monastery that, after more than a century of abandonment, was restored and occupied by a group of Cistercian monks. These monks worked hard to restore the monastery’s splendour, adding a remarkable library and a small archive. This visit is a true historical gem and a must-see if we are nearby.

Depending on the available time, we can choose between two options. The first is to visit the city of Ourense after checking in at the hotel, where we can explore the city and enjoy its rich gastronomy. The second option is to divert our journey to the charming town of Allariz, awarded the European Urbanism Prize for the rehabilitation of its historic centre. Here, we can also enjoy local cuisine before heading back to Ourense to rest.

At the end of this busy day, we will rest at the selected accommodation in Ourense.

  • Day 3: Winery Visit – Ribadavia – Castelo de Ribadavia – Outariz Hot Springs

After a delicious breakfast at our accommodation in Ourense, we will head to a D.O. Ribeiro Winery, where we will enjoy a guided tour that includes a special wine tasting. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the production process of one of Galicia’s most traditional wines.

If we wish to expand our wine-tasting experience in the area, we can visit other wineries and vineyards, such as Pazo Casanova, which also offers tastings and a unique environment for wine lovers.

Next, we will continue to Ribadavia, a picturesque town located on the banks of the Avia River, perfect for strolling through its beautiful streets. It is a charming place, full of character, with several options for tapas and local dining. In Ribadavia, we will also find the Castelo de Ribadavia, a medieval fortress overlooking the town, near the Main Square, an ideal spot to explore and enjoy the surroundings.

After visiting the castle, we will head to the Outariz Hot Springs, a thermal complex offering a Zen relaxation environment inspired by Eastern civilization techniques. Here, we can enjoy all the amenities, with treatments based on innovative Japanese techniques, perfect for relaxation and revitalization.

Finally, we will return to our accommodation in Ourense, where we will rest after a full and enriching day.

  • Day 4: Ribeira Sacra - Catamaran Tour through the Sil Canyon - Monforte de Lemos - Oca Augas Spa.

We start the day with breakfast at the accommodation in Ourense, from where we will head to the Ribeira Sacra. Our first stop will be the Monastery of Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil, one of the most important monasteries in the region during the Middle Ages. Abandoned in 1835 after the disentailment, much of its structure remains well-preserved and offers spectacular views of the Sil Canyon. To get there, we will take a detour to Parada de Sil, a picturesque town that is also worth visiting.

Next, we will continue to the Ribeira Sacra Viewpoint in Vilar de Cerrada, where we can enjoy panoramic views of the area. Later, we will reach the Santo Estevo Pier, where we will embark on a catamaran to take a Tour through the Sil Canyon, one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Galicia.

According to Roman mythology, the Sil Canyon was born out of the jealousy of Juno, Jupiter’s wife, who, upon seeing her husband’s love for Galicia, created a wound in the land to disillusion him. Instead of achieving her goal, Jupiter grew furious and condemned Juno to wander through that wound, which we now know as the Sil Canyon.

During the catamaran ride, we will admire the stunning waterfalls that reach 500 meters in height at various points. The scenery, with slopes of more than 70%, is simply breathtaking. Additionally, we will see the centuries-old vineyards of the Ribeira Sacra Denomination of Origin, which cover the slopes of the canyon.

We will then head to Monforte de Lemos, where we will stop for lunch. On the way, we can visit the Monastery of Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil, a monastery of Baroque and Romanesque style, with roots tracing back to the 6th and 7th centuries.

After lunch in Monforte de Lemos, we can visit the Monastery of San Vicente do Pino, an imposing monumental complex guarded by the remains of the Castle of San Vicente, which preserves the Keep Tower and its ancient walls.

To end the day, we will head to the Oca Augas Santas Spa, a prestigious spa hotel where we can enjoy a well-deserved moment of relaxation in its facilities.

We will spend the night in Monforte de Lemos, at the selected accommodation, where we can rest after a day filled with history, nature, and relaxation.

  • Day 5: Monasteries of Samos - Sarria - Lugo

After breakfast and check-out at our accommodation in Monforte de Lemos, we will head towards the Monastery of Samos.

The Monastery of San Julián and Santa Basilisa of Samos dates back to the early medieval period, specifically the 7th century, during the Visigothic Kingdom. Its foundation is attributed to Saint Martin of Braga and was later renovated by Saint Fructuosus. Throughout the centuries, the monastery has faced challenges, including two major fires that marked its history. However, it is well-preserved today and remains the seat of the Benedictine Order.

After completing the visit, we can choose to have lunch in Samos or Sarria, or head directly to Lugo to enjoy its gastronomy. Once in Lugo, we will begin exploring the city, whose main attraction is undoubtedly the Roman Wall, declared a World Heritage Site, encircling the old town of the ancient Lucus Augusti.

During our tour of the city, we can also visit the Provincial Museum of Lugo, the Casa dos Mosaicos, which houses an impressive collection of Roman mosaics, and the Catedral de Lugo, a Romanesque and Gothic-style cathedral that is worth stopping to admire.

After exploring, we will return to the assigned accommodation, where we will spend the night and rest.

  • Day 6: Castelo de Pambre - Monte do Gozo - Santiago

We will have breakfast at the hotel in Lugo, check out, and head towards Santiago de Compostela, passing through municipalities along the French Way of Saint James. Along the way, we will stop at Castelo de Pambre, a 14th-century castle located in Palas de Rey, which belonged to the Counts of Monterrei. This castle served as a protective outpost for pilgrims traveling the Way of Saint James.

Next, we recommend stopping in Melide to enjoy its exquisite gastronomy. This town is famous for offering one of the best "Pulpo a Feira" in all of Spain, a delicacy not to be missed.

Upon reaching Santiago de Compostela, we will make a brief stop at Monte do Gozo. From here, pilgrims enjoy one of the most iconic views of the city, a moment etched in the memory of those who have walked the Way.

Finally, we will check in at the assigned accommodation in Santiago de Compostela and dedicate the rest of the day to strolling and enjoying the city where this adventure began.

  • Day 7: Breakfast and end of services.

On the following morning, we will have breakfast and check out from the accommodation. If we opted for a rental vehicle, we will return it at the designated location (train station or airport).

We wish you a pleasant return journey and hope these days in Galicia have left unforgettable memories in your heart.
